Type A

Type A is a nice little horizontal shooter that I was in two minds about puting it on here because I don’t really get it but some thing brings me back to it once in a while. It’s your basic horizontal shooter where you have an every increasing amount of heads and small men coming towards you who try their best to finish you off which sometimes is easy for them because their bullets tend to get mixed up the diamonds and hand bags to mention two things that get left behind once you shoot one of them for you to collect so it can be quite hard. Graphics are hand draw and look very nice indeed as does the scrolling back drop very nice. Controls are Cursor keys to move, Z keys is your primary weapon and X key is your special weapon or you can use a game pad. Most of you will not like this but a few may so give it a go and see.

Merubyiusu

Today I bring a nice little horizontal browser shmup I found over on Indie Games. It’s quite a cute looking little shooter really but don’t be fooled by cute looks because this is in fact quite a hard little game to crack but to help you get one main weapon and a special weapon that you have to collect power ups for each power up changes before you collect it to give you a choice of three different weapons. The only thing is you either use your primary fire power or your special you can’t use both at once and as you progress you find yourself changing between the two as the action on-screen becomes quite hectic as you progress through the game with all manner of enemies being thrown at you and some pretty mean bosses too. Visuals are nice and retro which I really like and quite cute as I said. Controls are Cursor Keys to move, X Keys is your primary weapon and C Key is what you use to change to your special weapon. It’s well worth a try when you have a few minutes to spare.

Adventum

Adventum is a horizontal shooter from Astro Port that has a slight difference in that you control a tank instead of a craft and all the fighter is done on the ground so im not sure if your would call it a shmup but its a cracking little demo and needs to be mentioned. Instead of special weapons you get to choose three characters that you swap between each having their own weapon so i guess you could call the special weapons all of which you can power up to give you more fire power to deal with the ever increasing onslaught from tanks, armoured lorries and hot air balloons and gun turrets to name a few along with mid level and end level bosses so power up as soon as you can. Graphics are really nice and detailed and look just great as do the other Astro Port games so for that alone it’s worth a download. Controls are Cursor Keys to move, Z Keys is your main weapon, X Key is for jumping and C Keys is for swapping between characters or use is game pad if you have one. A shmup it may not be but its a dame fine shooter im looking forward to this being finished.

Broom Craft

I came across this whilst looking for another game and liked the look of the screen shots so I downloaded and found quite a good little horizontal cute em up that for some reason reminds me of Super Mario Brothers Not sure why could be the music or the very nice cute graphics Ill leave it up to you to decide. What you get though is a tough shooter that is quite hard so don’t let the looks make you think it will be easy you may well be shooting birds and balloons but they are all intent on destroying you so make sure you keep your eyes open. You get two weapons each of which you have to power up before they work so make sure you collect everything left by the enemies as this is what makes you more powerful and you do need it in later levels. Controls are Cursor keys to move, X Key is your primary weapon and Z Key is your special weapon once it’s powered up or you can use a game pad. This really is a nice game and well worth a download.

Ake-Bre

Ake-Bre is one of the hardest horizontal shooters I’ve come across for along time even on easy setting this is a rock hard shooter that will take most a while to complete. It also has a slight twist in that you have to contend with defeating the both in front and behind you by turning your player in the opposite direction. There are plenty of power ups along the way to help you out and you will need them because when you get to level two things really hot up and the bosses are a real pain to defeat and you have a set time limit to do it. Visuals are very nice 3D effect and the backgrounds also are deep 3D looking it’s one of the best of it’s kind on the visual front. Controls are game pad and it’s best to see what button does what as there are a few surprises for you to find out. One for hardcore fans is this.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Browser shmup but when I came across this one I had to bring it to you all. It’s a horizontal shooter that is very challenging most browser based games are quite easy this one though is the exception because what we have is a near bullet hell game right from the word go if it’s not the bullets that get you it’s the enemies of which the screen is full of all trying to finish you off. To help you get to choose one of four characters to use each with their strong points and if you collect enough coins you also get to visit the shop at the end of each level to purchase a useful power up which you will need so be sure to collect as much gold as you can. Graphics and sound are very good and wouldn’t look out of place in a stand alone game i’d go as far as saying they are some of the best i’ve seen in a browser shmup as they are very detail and colourful. Controls are Mouse operated and Space Bar is your special weapon. This one is really to good to miss out on try it now.

Mayakai

Mayakai is a strange horizontal shooter I came across on Indiegames . It’s not a bad little shooter with only four levels but I don’t quite get some of the enemies that are contained with it. You get to shoot all manor of things from birds to flowers to toys and some very elegant picture frames as well they might be strange but everyone of these tries to destroy you in a hale of bullets. To help you get a choice of two characters to choose from each with their own strengths and each have three weapons at their disposal all of which you need if you wish to beat the massive end of level bosses which are also very strange looking. Visuals looks like hand drawn graphics and they are very detailed and colourful so the whole game looks nice and plays smoothly. Controls are Cursor Keys to Move, Z Keys is your Primary weapon, X is one Special Weapon and C Key is the other you can also use a game pad if you wish. If you like you bad guys strange looking give this a go.

Armalyte

This is a brilliant remake of the classic Commodore 64 classic horizontal shmup Armalyte. If you never played the original then you must give this a try because its from when shmups where from hard to complete because the level of difficulty was always very hard however it kept you coming back for just one more try time and time again. It has all the classic elements of a shmup power ups bosses wave after wave of enemies however the power ups are nothing like they are today. The visuals and sound and music have all been revamped and it looks very nice indeed and the guys who remade this are the best re-makers out there at the minute in fact most of what they do is normally freeware and can be found over on Retro Remakes . Controls are keyboard or joy pad so choose which you prefer from the main menu. If you like rock hard shmups give this a go.

Trouble Witches

Anyone who is into Japanese shmups must have heard of this game it’s been around for a while but it’s as fresh today as when it was first released so I’m giving another airing. Its a horizontal cute em up as the call them and it has some of the most colourful and detail visuals and the size of some of them are huge and everything just looks really nice. Despite that what you really have is a rock hard shooter that will keep you busy for a while and will keep you coming back for more. You have a massive array of fire power at your hands you just have to work out which is best to use and when because your going to need them. I could go on and on but the best thing to do is try it for yourself, Controls are Cursor keys to move, Z keys is your primary weapon, X key is your special weapon and C Key is a coin collecting shield. I’ve not tried the download link below because I bought the CD version but searching on forums it seems to be a good download link however it is a big download so slow connections could take a while.

Biker Banditz

Since coming across this game I’ve pretty much been playing it none stop. It’s a horizontal shooter that has some of the nicest cartoon style I’ve seen in a game however just because of that it doesn’t mean it’s a push over it has enemies coming at you in all directions at lighting speeds so reflexes are a must for this it also has some of the biggest bosses ever. To help you you get to choose from three characters to do your fighting for you and then you get your primary weapon and a special weapon which has to be charged to get the best effect from it. Controls are Cursor keys to move, Z key is your primary weapon and X key is your special weapon and you can use a joypad if you wish. Al shmup fans will love this game so give it a try.
