Ake-Bre

Ake-Bre is one of the hardest horizontal shooters I’ve come across for along time even on easy setting this is a rock hard shooter that will take most a while to complete. It also has a slight twist in that you have to contend with defeating the both in front and behind you by turning your player in the opposite direction. There are plenty of power ups along the way to help you out and you will need them because when you get to level two things really hot up and the bosses are a real pain to defeat and you have a set time limit to do it. Visuals are very nice 3D effect and the backgrounds also are deep 3D looking it’s one of the best of it’s kind on the visual front. Controls are game pad and it’s best to see what button does what as there are a few surprises for you to find out. One for hardcore fans is this.

Magi Magi

Magi Magi is a vertical shooter that was revealed ay Comiket 76 and it drew my attention to it the minute I saw the first screen shots. It’s an odd game but one that has a very steep learning curve everything starts off nice and easy but by the time you reach level three this thing is very hard indeed not only do you get enemies coming towards you the come from every angle you could care to mention all firing a mass of bullets intent on destroying you which in my case happened a lot. Fear not because you get a choose of three characters to choose from when starting each with three weapons to help you out which are you primary shot then you get a homing shot and then a sword which you use at very close quarters as a last resort. Graphics and sound are very good colourful and crisp which is a nice change and the music also matches in perfect. Controls are Cursor Keys to move, Z Key is your primary, X Key is you homing shot and C Key is your sword you can also use a gamepad if you wish. Well worth a look this one.

SkyFyre

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Browser shmup but when I came across this one I had to bring it to you all. It’s a horizontal shooter that is very challenging most browser based games are quite easy this one though is the exception because what we have is a near bullet hell game right from the word go if it’s not the bullets that get you it’s the enemies of which the screen is full of all trying to finish you off. To help you get to choose one of four characters to use each with their strong points and if you collect enough coins you also get to visit the shop at the end of each level to purchase a useful power up which you will need so be sure to collect as much gold as you can. Graphics and sound are very good and wouldn’t look out of place in a stand alone game i’d go as far as saying they are some of the best i’ve seen in a browser shmup as they are very detail and colourful. Controls are Mouse operated and Space Bar is your special weapon. This one is really to good to miss out on try it now.

Happy Birthday

Tomorrow marks TopShmups first birthday yes it’s been a full twelve months since I started what was only going to be a trial to see if  there was any room for another Shmup site in what is a very small community and I’m pleased to say that so far I think its been a success with the blog getting more hits as each month goes by. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who keeps coming back and to other Shmup sites that have helped in pointing people in my direction you know who you are. Here’s to the next twelve months.

I’ve not mentioned this game for a while but thought I’d better tell you that it has had another update. I know its had quite a few in its time but they haven’t been that much difference and now the game is a few more months old things have changed a lot with different graphics more levels and it feels just a lot better so go over there now and check the latest addition out.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nonoha Barrage

Well this game wins the title for the longest name and it’s not a bad little Japanese vertical shooter. I’ve added this game for all you bullet loving fans out there because the levels might not be the longest in the world but more than makes up for it in the bullet pattern department even on the easy settings your bombarded with bullets so this is one for the quick reflex crowd out there. To help you get a choice of characters to play each with different abilities so choose wisely and the each have three weapons to help you along the way. The bosses take an age to destroy and once again throw bullets at you all of the time some even follow you round the screen until they go off the edge. Graphics are very nice and colourful and the game plays very smooth indeed. Controls are cursor Keys to move,Z Key is your primary weapon, X Key is your secondary and C Key is your special weapon or you can use a joy pad. Worth a download if you like lots of bullets.

I’ve a cool little vertical shooter for you today it has all the classic game elements that I like. It’s kind of 1942 meets Patriot Dark doesn’t take much thinking about but is fun to play. You get three ships to choose from each with their own ability so choose wisely which you pick or you could find yourself in a whole lot of trouble there are also plenty of power ups along the way to help you out. Enemies come in all shapes and size and are kine to destroy you in a hale of bullets which there are a lot or and they look very nice indeed. Graphics are nice and detailed and colourful and play very smooth indeed. Controls are Cursor Keys to move, Z Key is your primary weapon, X Key is your special weapon, C Keys is your bombs and the Enter Key toggles between full screen and windowed mode. If you like classic shooters this is for you.

Exceed 3rd Jade Penetrate

As the new trial version Exceed 3rd Jade Penetrate The Black Package has been released I thought I’d remind everyone off the previous version. It has pretty much the same game play but I think the enemies in this version are a lot harder and there are alot more of them to deal with. Bullets also seem to be everywhere too which I think makes this version that much harder to complete. visuals are of the same standard as is the rock music playing in the background in fact it is hard to say which is better in the sound and visual department. I’ll leave it for you to give it a try and see which is best.

Broken Garden

A slight change of pace for a change with a nice little browser vertical shmup. There is nothing to taxing in this game well not in the early levels they do get harder as you go on but with nimble fingers you should soon get to the end of this. Lots of bad guys to shoot at and they like to shoot back at you some are easy to dodge but the ones who fire lasers are a little more difficult. To power you weapons up after each level you get to buy upgrades and you will need them. graphics are nice and simple and everything seems to move nice and smooth. Controls are Cursor Keys to Move, Z key is your Primary Weapon and X key is your secondary weapon. This is more of a game for playing when you don’t have much time or don’t feel like a bullet hell game.
